Sangiran Site is one of heritage tourist destination in Central Java which is the main stay tourism. Sangiran site determined by The Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia as The Culture heritage since 1977. By 1996, Sangiran site was listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage Site. In UNESCO, Sangiran site had official name as Sangiran First Man Site. It is an archaeological site which is located on between Sragen regency and Karanganyar regency. It’s about 15 kms north of Surakarta , exactly on valley of Bengawan Solo river and situated on the foot of Mount Lawu.
The story began when 1934, Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald, the anthropologist, started research around Sangiran area. The first result show that Sangiran is a dome which was called as Sangiran Dome. Then, the dome of Sangiran was opened through a process of erosion to form a depression. In the depression there was the layer of soil that contain information about life in the past.
In the subsequent years, the research started given a result. The result of excavations discovered the fossil of the first human ancestors, Pithecanthropus Erectus or Java Man. Moreover, there are about 60 more other fossils have been found on Sangiran site. One of them is Meganthropus Palaeojavanicus.
Beside Sangiran site, tourist can find Sangiran Museum which is near the site. In this museum, tourist can deep studied the history of early-ancient human since about 2 million years ago to 200.000 years ago, right from Late Pliocene to Middle-Late Pleistocene. Sangiran Museum is the most comprehensive upright hominid site in Asia. At least you can find 13.086 collection of early human fossil here. Not only about the early human, you will also find vertebrata fossil, water animal fossil, rocks, marine plants fossils and old tools which made from stone.
