Baluran National Park

Baluran National Park is one of National Park located on East Java. It is exactly on Banyuputih, Situbondo, East Java province. This national park consists of savannah vegetation types, mangrove forest, monsoon forest, beach forest, lower montane forests, swamp forest and evergreen forest throughout the year. Savanna vegetation types dominate Baluran National Park area which is about 40 percent of the total land area. This national park was established in March 6^th 1980. The name of national park is taken from the name of mountain which is near of this national park area, Mount Baluran.

Baluran National Park is very important for protecting endangered animal, especially species of big mammals.  More over, this national park has strongly function as Protected Forest and also The Wildlife.  Based on The Decree ( Surat Keputusan* ) Minister of Forestry no. 279/Kpts.-VI/1997, May 23^rd 1997 this national park is about 25,000 Ha.

 This national park consist of 26 species of mammals, among which are leopard ( panther pardus weld ), mouse deer ( tragulus pelandoc javanicus ), wild buffalo ( bubalus bubalis ), deer ( cervus russa timorensis ),  cat mangrove ( prionailurus viverrinus ), bull ( bos javanicus, javanicus )and dhole ( cuon alpines javanicus ). Animal bison is the mascot of this national park. This national park also has 155 species of birds, which is included endangered bird such as stork barrels ( leptoptilos javanicus ), bird hornbill ( buceros rhinoceros ), peacock ( pavo muticus ), tuwuk asia ( eudynamys scolopacea ), kite fire ( hirundo rustica ), and chicken red woods ( gallus gallus ).

Baluran national park also has at least 444 species of plants and native plants which are unique and able to adapt in very dry weather.  Some unique plants in this national park are mimba ( azadirachta indica ), pilang ( acacia leucophloea ) and widoro bukol ( ziziphus rotundifolia ).
